As a Phoenix criminal defense attorney, Steven Scharboneau primarily practices in the area of criminal defense and is extremely passionate about protecting others’ rights. He strives to achieve this by advocating for his clients directly in the courtroom and indirectly at the legislative level. Understanding how the criminal justice system works is crucial to bringing the practice to fruition. Steven graduated cum laude from the University of Arizona, earning a bachelor’s degree in political science with an emphasis in law and public policy. He then earned his Juris Doctorate from ASU Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law. While in law school, he was a research assistant for current and retired Maricopa County Superior Court judges for whom he examined intricacies in changes within the Arizona criminal code.
Beyond his work defending clients from the government, Steven works with Arizona’s top criminal justice reform leaders to transform Arizona’s penal system. He regularly spends time at the Arizona State Capitol meeting with legislators and special interest groups, testifies in Arizona House and Senate committees on topics including criminal justice reform and municipal incorporation, and has participated in several speaking engagements such as being invited to discuss sentencing reform on ABC Family Dennis Welch’s Politics Unplugged with Representative Diego Rodriguez.
In 2019, Steven worked with attorney Craig Rosenstein and other members of Arizona Attorneys for Criminal Justice to conceptualize, draft and lobby for what has been dubbed the Arizona Mugshot Act. Arizona’s new mugshot law prohibits mugshot website operators from posting Arizona citizens’ criminal justice records online to solicit pecuniary gain. Steven and Craig now use this law to take on mugshot operators who exploit an individual’s worst day of their life just put an extra dollar in their pocket. Steven was awarded the Presidential Commendation from Arizona Attorneys for Criminal Justice for his contribution to criminal justice reform in the 2019 legislative session.
Steven enjoys spending time with his family and rooting on his 11-year old daughter during her cross-country races when not working. He also enjoys martial arts and taking full advantage of Arizona’s amazing outdoors while hiking, camping, and kayaking. Steven often volunteers in his community. For example, he was appointed by the former Mayor of Phoenix, Greg Stanton, to serve on the Rio Vista Village Planning Committee.
