You may feel as though the room is spinning, and may also experience nausea, vomiting, and nystagmus (abnormal or jerking eye movements).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aside from dizziness and balance problems, common symptoms of vertigo include:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Recurring headaches<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Motion sickness, nausea or vomiting<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Hearing loss or ringing in the ears, known as tinnitus<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Double vision<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fatigue<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Anxiety<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ears feeling constantly full of fluid or wax<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lightheadedness or fainting<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meniere\u2019s disease<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The severity of vertigo symptoms varies from mild and manageable to severely debilitating. Symptoms can last from a few minutes to a few hours, or in some cases for a period of days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How Can Military Service Cause Vertigo?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conditions you experience during your military service can cause ear issues that lead to peripheral vertigo. These include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Continuous exposure to loud machinery<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Exposure to loud noises like explosions<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Foreign objects inside your ears that lead to inner ear problems<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Traumatic brain injury resulting in a perforated eardrum or ear infections<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Neck injuries<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Brain problems like a stroke or tumor<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Side effects of certain medications<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Migraine headaches<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>VA Ratings for Vertigo<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your vertigo VA rating will depend on the severity, frequency, and duration of your symptoms, as well as the type of vertigo you have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Peripheral Vertigo<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The VA offers benefits for those experiencing peripheral vertigo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Peripheral vertigo is the more common kind of vertigo. It involves problems with your inner ear or vestibular nerve that affect your balance. This type of vertigo is further categorized into two types of underlying problems that cause dizziness: peripheral vestibular disorders and Meniere\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Peripheral Vestibular Disorders<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Peripheral vestibular disorders affect your inner ear vestibular structures. Peripheral vestibular disorders that the VA recognizes include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, triggered by sudden head movement<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Acute unilateral vestibulopathy or vestibular neuritis, an inner ear disorder caused by viral infections<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bilateral vestibulopathy, a chronic imbalance syndrome that occurs when both inner ears are damaged<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vestibular paroxysmia, which describes short spurts of vertigo that can occur 30 or more times per day and usually last for a minute or less<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Third window syndrome, a group of conditions involving inner ear fluid leakage<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Meniere&#8217;s Disease<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meniere\u2019s disease is a disorder caused by fluid building up in the chambers of the inner ear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Central Vertigo<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Central vertigo is less common than peripheral vertigo. It happens because of a traumatic brain event like a stroke, tumor, or infection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although the VA provides disability benefits for veterans who have experienced brain trauma that causes central vertigo, it does not consider vertigo caused by one of those traumatic events to be a source for additional monthly disability compensation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For peripheral vestibular disorders, the VA rates vertigo under the following diagnostic codes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>DC 6204 (Peripheral vestibular disorders)<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>DC 6205 (Meniere\u2019s syndrome)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;Ratings for peripheral vestibular disorders are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>30% for<strong> <\/strong>symptoms including dizziness and occasional staggering<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>10% for symptoms including only occasional dizziness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ratings for Meniere\u2019s disease are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>100% for<strong> <\/strong>symptoms including hearing impairment with attacks of vertigo and a wide, staggering gait more than once weekly, with or without ringing in the ears<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>60% for<strong> <\/strong>symptoms including hearing impairment with attacks of vertigo and a wide, staggering gait one to four times a month, with or without ringing in the ears<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>30% for<strong> <\/strong>symptoms including hearing impairment with vertigo less than once a month, with or without ringing in the ears<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"857\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stoneroselaw.com\/veteranslaw\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/10\/VA-Vertigo-Ratings-857x1024.webp\" alt=\"VA Vertigo Ratings\" class=\"wp-image-6865\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stoneroselaw.com\/veteranslaw\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/10\/VA-Vertigo-Ratings-857x1024.webp 857w, https:\/\/www.stoneroselaw.com\/veteranslaw\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/10\/VA-Vertigo-Ratings-251x300.webp 251w, https:\/\/www.stoneroselaw.com\/veteranslaw\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/10\/VA-Vertigo-Ratings-768x917.webp 768w, https:\/\/www.stoneroselaw.com\/veteranslaw\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/10\/VA-Vertigo-Ratings-1286x1536.webp 1286w, https:\/\/www.stoneroselaw.com\/veteranslaw\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/10\/VA-Vertigo-Ratings-1715x2048.webp 1715w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 1362px) 62vw, 840px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Total Disability Based on Individual Unemployability (TDIU)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your VA disability rating for vertigo is less than 100% you may still qualify for total disability benefits under TDIU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">TDIU can apply to you in one of two ways: schedular TDIU, or extraschedular TDIU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Schedular TDIU Benefits<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To qualify for TDIU benefits for vertigo symptoms, you must meet the following requirements:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You must have at least one service-connected disability rated as at least 60 percent disabling, or multiple service-connected disabilities rated as at least 70 percent disabling with one individual rating of at 40 percent or more; and<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You cannot maintain substantially gainful employment.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For vertigo, a situation that may warrant TDIU benefits would be if your dizzy spells are frequent and severe enough to make it dangerous for you to work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You will need to support a claim for TDIU benefits with documentary evidence. For example, a letter from your doctor recommending you to cease working and a letter from your employer explaining that you can no longer complete your job tasks because of your condition from your employer would support a TDIU claim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Extraschedular TDIU Benefits<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike schedular TDIU, which requires you to meet specific disability rating thresholds, the VA can give you extraschedular TDIU when your service-connected conditions are so severe that they still prevent you from keeping substantially gainful employment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To qualify for extra-schedular TDIU, you must demonstrate that your service-connected disabilities create an exceptional or unusual disability that makes the standard rating schedule inadequate. The general process is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Submit an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vba.va.gov\/pubs\/forms\/VBA-21-0966-ARE.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">intent to file form<\/a> with the VA.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you plan to submit your benefits application online, create an online account with the VA.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gather supporting medical evidence from your doctor, including a nexus letter linking your diagnosis to a specific event or conditions present during your time in service.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Complete <a href=\"https:\/\/www.va.gov\/disability\/file-disability-claim-form-21-526ez\/introduction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">VA Form 21-526EZ<\/a> submit it online, or by mail, or in person at our local VA office.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Proving a Service Connection for Vertigo Symptoms<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To file a successful claim for VA disability benefits, you must establish a connection between your present symptoms and your military service. This is known as a service connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To establish a service connection, you will need to show the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You have a current medical diagnosis of vertigo symptoms.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An in-service illness, injury, or event caused your vertigo symptoms.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A medical nexus exists connecting your current vertigo symptoms to the in-service event, illness, or injury.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You will need to support your benefits claim application with documentary evidence. This can include medical records of treatment while you were still in the military, your civilian doctor&#8217;s diagnosis and records or medical treatment, and written statements from others evidencing how your vertigo symptoms affect your ability to work and to participate in daily life activities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A key supporting document will be a nexus letter. Your diagnosing and treating physician will usually prepare this for you. Your benefits claim can include a Disability Benefits Questionnaire (DBQ) for<a href=\"https:\/\/www.benefits.va.gov\/compensation\/docs\/Ear_Including_Vestibular_and_Infectious.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"> ear conditions<\/a>. Your doctor may have copies of this form, or you can download it from the VA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Vertigo as a Secondary Service Connection<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A secondary disability is a disability that is caused by or linked to a service-connected disability. If you have two or more disabilities, the VA can combine all your ratings to <a href=\"https:\/\/veteransguide.org\/va-disability-calculator\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">calculate your overall disability rating<\/a>. That means a secondary disability can increase your rating and entitle you to more compensation.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A veteran\u2019s vertigo condition is most often a symptom of an underlying condition. If this underlying condition also qualifies as a VA disability, you do not need to prove vertigo as a primary service-connected disability. Instead, you can seek to establish a nexus showing vertigo as a secondary disability caused by the underlying condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Examples of conditions that can lead to vertigo as a secondary disability include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Meniere&#8217;s disease<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tinnitus<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Migraines<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hearing impairment or hearing loss<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Peripheral vestibular disorders<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Labyrinthitis<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Acoustic neuroma<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Compensation and Pension (C&amp;P) Exams for Vertigo<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During its consideration of your disability benefits claim, the VA may schedule you for a Compensation and Pension (C&amp;P) exam. The purpose of this exam is to give the VA the opportunity to gather additional information to decide whether to assign you a disability rating for your vertigo symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A C&amp;P exam is not voluntary for you. If the VA schedules you for one, then you need to attend it or risk delay or denial of your claim.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The C&amp;P exam will usually be performed by a VA examiner, who is ordinarily a VA-contracted physician.&nbsp; The VA examiner will review your applicable service records of treatment, if any, along with your other medical records of diagnosis and treatment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The examiner may ask you questions about your vertigo symptoms and how they are affecting your life. The C&amp;P exam will often conclude with a physical exam that can also include some tests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What if the VA Denies Your Vertigo Benefits Claim?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes the VA will not approve an initial claim for vertigo symptoms. This can happen because of an incomplete claim, a lack of sufficient supporting evidence, or, in some cases, the VA itself can make an error in processing your claim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the VA does not approve your initial claim, you have three options to revive it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>File a Supplemental Claim<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The purpose of a supplemental claim is to give the VA new and relevant evidence to bolster your initial claim to overcome a denial based on lack of sufficient evidence or an incomplete claim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Request a Higher-Level Review<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you believe that the VA has mistakenly denied your claim, a higher-level review can give a senior VA examiner the opportunity to go over your claim again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Make a Formal Request for a Hearing<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you have tried a supplemental claim or requested a higher-level review and the VA is still denying your claim, you can make an appeal to the VA Board of Veterans Appeals.
