Attorney Steven Scharboneau primarily focuses on the areas of criminal defense, legislative advocacy, and appellate advocacy. He is extremely passionate about protecting the rights of others and achieves this by advocating for his clients directly in the courtroom and indirectly at the legislative level as a lobbyist.
Steven graduated cum laude from the University of Arizona, earning a bachelor’s degree in political science, emphasizing law and public policy. He then earned his Juris Doctorate degree from ASU Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law and is licensed to practice law in Arizona and in the U.S. District Court in the District of Arizona.
Steven works with Arizona’s top criminal justice reform leaders in an effort to transform Arizona’s penal system. He regularly spends time at the Arizona State Capitol meeting with elected officials, community leaders, and special interest groups. He frequently testifies in Arizona House and Senate committees. He is regularly quoted and interviewed by the media for his expertise on criminal law and justice issues in Arizona and has spoken at a number of private and public speaking engagements. His writings on topics of the law and politics are often published as a guest commentary in news media outlets.
Steven has achieved a myriad of victories for his clients during his legal career, including several appellate wins. He is also responsible for drafting and ushering successful legislation such as Arizona’s law prohibiting for-profit commercial mugshot companies and Title 28 (Vehicular Code) reform legislation—both of which were signed into law by Arizona’s Governor. Steven has had a hand in groundbreaking criminal justice reform legislation, including expungement legislation, criminal sentencing reform, and the elimination of license suspensions for unpaid fines. In 2020, he received a Presidential Commendation from the Arizona Attorneys for Criminal Justice in recognition of his dedicated work at the legislature to improve the lives of Arizonans fighting for a second chance.
Steven enjoys spending time with his family and rooting for his daughter during her cross-country races when not working. Steven often volunteers in his community and sits on the board of two non-profit organizations, and serves as the Vice-Chair of the Phoenix Rio Vista Village Planning Committee by appointment from the former Mayor, Greg Stanton.
