Is it Legal to Split Lanes in Arizona in 2022?

Posted on June 30, 2022 in

The rules of the road are important to follow, and if you have been injured in an accident caused by someone who was breaking them, you could be entitled to compensation. Being in an accident that was caused by someone or something else may entitle you to damages to cover all costs associated with your accident, ranging from medical bills to lost earnings at work. Following the rules of the road is only possible when you know them, and a recent change to Arizona law will change the way in which drivers and motorcyclists interact, and will change the illegal status of splitting lanes in some situations.

The experienced Phoenix motorcycle accident lawyers from Stone Rose Law are standing by to provide a risk-free, cost-free analysis of your accident, whether caused by the new split lane law or otherwise.

Split Lane Laws in Arizona Have Changed

Under the new Arizona Law SB1273, recently signed into law by Governor Greg Ducey, motorcyclists are allowed to share lanes with cars in stopped traffic. The new law signals a change to the way in which motorcyclists are allowed to move through traffic.

A motorcyclist may share the lane with a car legally only when:

  • The speed limit is at or below 45 miles per hour
  • The motorcycle is not moving any faster than 15 miles per hour
  • The street is split into at least two lanes moving in the same direction of travel

Supporters of SB1273 note that the changes to the law will make the roads of Arizona safer for motorcyclists. When any driver of a motor vehicle is on the road, they have a duty to drive safely and responsibly, which includes following all traffic laws and driving attentively. If a driver breaks the rules of the road and causes an accident that injures you, you will be entitled to compensation. The best way to ensure that you are able to collect full coverage for the costs and damages associated with your motorcycle accident is by working with a Phoenix motorcycle accident attorney.

The reason that SB1273 was enacted is due to the high level of danger that motorcyclists can face when they are sandwiched between cars or rear-ended. This is a partial fix to a larger problem, and motorcycle accidents still happen regularly. Motorcycle accidents can lead to life-changing injuries that can cost you and your family a great deal of money if a fair and complete settlement is not achieved.

The risk to motorcyclists in an accident is markedly greater for the motorcyclist than the driver of a motor vehicle. The National Highway Safety Transportation Administration notes that motorcyclists continue to be overrepresented in terms of fatal traffic crashes, and in 2020 alone some 5,579 motorcyclists died on the roads of the US.
