Over 50 years ago, Stone Rose Law Client C.O. was commended for his work saving Vietnamese refugees on the U.S.S. Andrew Miller. When the VA denied his claim in 2010, C.O. gave up. That was until he found Stone Rose Law. After getting C.O. the benefits he was wrongfully withheld, Stone Rose Law—assisted by Benjamin Binder and Eddie Miller at Binder & Watson—took the fight to the VA and forced the VA to grant C.O. his benefits back to 2010.

In honor of this success, C.O. was invited to the Arizona House of Representatives to meet Representative Quang Nguyen, Chair of the House Judiciary Committee. Unknown to all, Rep. Nguyen and C.O. had met over 50 years ago – aboard the U.S.S. Andrew Miller. Rep. Nguyen and his family were not only refugees from the Vietnam War but were among the refugees saved in part by the actions of C.O.

While the U.S.S. Andrew Miller took on hundreds of more refugees than it could handle, Marines like C.O. gave up food, water, and their berthing areas to ensure that women, children, and the elderly had enough to eat. And after a helicopter crashed on deck, Marines like C.O. sprang into action to rescue those impacted.

After more than 50 years, C.O. was able to see the direct impact of his work. Rep. Nguyen is not only one of Arizona’s most effective legislators, Rep. Nguyen is also the proud father of a Naval Officer and Nuclear Engineer.

Derek Debus, the Director of Military and Veterans Law at Stone Rose Law, had this to say:

“As veterans, we so rarely get to see the impact of the work we do overseas. There was not a dry eye in the room when C.O. discussed how meaningful it was to meet Rep. Nguyen and see that everything he sacrificed was worth it. I am so thankful not only to Rep. Nguyen for taking the time to meet my client but also to C.O. for his service to our country.”
